Overview

Augmentin combines amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, a β-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from enzymatic degradation, broadening its spectrum.

Uses

Treats sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis, urinary and skin infections, and resistant Staphylococcus or H. influenzae infections.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 875 mg/125 mg every 12 hours or 500 mg/125 mg every 8 hours. Take at the start of a meal to enhance absorption and reduce GI upset.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common: diarrhea, nausea, and rash. Serious: liver enzyme elevation, cholestatic jaundice, and allergic reactions. Contraindicated in previous hepatic dysfunction linked to Augmentin or penicillin allergy.
