Overview

Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic used to treat bacterial and certain parasitic infections. It inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, preventing the addition of amino acids to growing peptide chains. Known for excellent tissue penetration, it is widely used in infectious disease management.

Uses

Doxycycline treats respiratory infections, acne, urinary-tract infections, chlamydia, Lyme disease, malaria prophylaxis, and rosacea. It also shows efficacy against some atypical pathogens such as Rickettsia, Mycoplasma, and Chlamydia trachomatis.

Dosage & Administration

Usual adult dose: 100 mg twice daily on day one, followed by 100 mg once daily. For malaria prophylaxis: 100 mg daily, starting 1–2 days before travel and continuing 4 weeks after leaving endemic areas. Take with plenty of water and avoid lying down immediately afterward.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common: nausea, photosensitivity, diarrhea, heartburn. Serious: esophageal irritation, tooth discoloration in children, and hepatic toxicity with prolonged use. Contraindicated in pregnancy and children under 8 years.

Patient Considerations

Avoid dairy, antacids, or iron supplements within 2 hours of dosing. Use sunscreen to prevent sunburn reactions. Complete the prescribed course even if symptoms subside early.
