Overview

Paroxetine, branded Paxil, is a potent SSRI antidepressant approved in 1992. It increases serotonin availability by inhibiting neuronal reuptake, thereby improving mood and reducing anxiety. Among SSRIs, it has relatively short half-life and mild anticholinergic properties.

Uses

Treats major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Dosage & Administration

Start at 20 mg once daily, increased gradually up to 50 mg/day depending on tolerance. Controlled-release tablets allow once-daily dosing with fewer GI effects. Take at the same time each day.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common: nausea, drowsiness, sweating, and sexual dysfunction. Serious: serotonin syndrome, withdrawal upon abrupt stop, and hyponatremia in elderly. Avoid alcohol and MAOIs.

Patient Considerations

Taper slowly when discontinuing. Weight gain may occur with long-term use. Monitor mood for suicidal ideation in early therapy..
