Overview

Valacyclovir, sold under the brand Valtrex, is an antiviral prodrug rapidly converted to acyclovir in the body. It was developed to improve the oral bioavailability of acyclovir, enabling less frequent dosing.

Uses

Treats herpes simplex infections (cold sores, genital herpes), shingles (herpes zoster), and chickenpox. Also used to reduce transmission risk in patients with frequent HSV-2 recurrences.

Dosage & Administration

Common regimens: 500 mg–1 g once or twice daily, depending on condition. Cold sores: 2 g twice daily for 1 day; shingles: 1 g three times daily for 7 days. Take with water and maintain hydration.

Side Effects & Warnings

Generally well tolerated. Possible effects: headache, nausea, and abdominal pain. Rare but serious: kidney impairment, confusion, or hallucinations, mainly in elderly or dehydrated patients.

Patient Considerations

Start therapy at the earliest symptom onset. Use safe-sex precautions even during suppressive treatment, as virus shedding can occur.
