Overview

Hydroxyzine, marketed as Atarax or Vistaril, is a first-generation antihistamine with anxiolytic, sedative, and anti-itch properties. It blocks H₁-receptors and depresses subcortical CNS activity.

Uses

Used for anxiety, pruritus, allergic reactions, and preoperative sedation.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 25–50 mg up to four times daily. Children: 0.6 mg/kg per dose. Taken orally or intramuscularly. Avoid alcohol and other sedatives.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common: drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness. Rare: QT-interval prolongation and confusion in elderly. Contraindicated in early pregnancy

Use lowest effective dose. Not recommended for long-term anxiety management if non-sedating agents are available.
