Overview

Alprazolam, sold as Xanax, is a short-acting benzodiazepine first approved in 1981. It enhances gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activity in the brain, producing anxiolytic, sedative, and muscle-relaxant effects.

Uses

Indicated for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and short-term management of anxiety symptoms. It is also used off-label for insomnia and premenstrual syndrome.

Common: drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Serious: dependence, withdrawal, memory impairment, and respiratory depression (especially with opioids or alcohol). Abrupt cessation can cause seizures.
