Overview

Zolpidem, marketed as Ambien, is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic that enhances GABA-A receptor activity through a different binding site. Approved in 1992, it induces sleep with minimal next-day residual effects at proper dosing.

Uses

Indicated for short-term treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep. Available in immediate-release, extended-release, and sublingual formulations.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 5–10 mg at bedtime for immediate-release, 6.25–12.5 mg for extended-release. Women and elderly often require lower doses due to slower metabolism. Take immediately before bed on an empty stomach.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common: dizziness, drowsiness, and headache. Rare: sleepwalking, hallucinations, and complex sleep behaviors (e.g., driving or eating while asleep). Dependence possible with long-term use. Avoid alcohol.

Patient Considerations

Use only when full 7–8 hours of sleep time is available. Do not take more than prescribed. Report any abnormal behaviors during sleep
