Overview
Vardenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It enhances the natural nitric oxide pathway by inhibiting PDE5, leading to relaxation of smooth muscles and increased blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. Marketed under brand names Levitra and Staxyn, it is structurally similar to sildenafil and tadalafil but has a slightly faster onset.
Uses
Used to restore erectile function in men with psychogenic, organic, or mixed causes of ED. It can also be prescribed off-label for pulmonary hypertension or Raynaud’s phenomenon, though less commonly than sildenafil.Dosage & Administration
Initial oral dose: 10 mg, taken approximately 60 minutes before sexual activity. May be adjusted between 5–20 mg based on response and tolerance. Orally disintegrating tablets (Staxyn) are placed on the tongue without water. Do not exceed one dose per day.Side Effects & Warnings
Common side effects: headache, flushing, nasal congestion, dyspepsia. Rare: visual changes, prolonged erection (priapism), sudden hearing loss, and hypotension. Never use concurrently with nitrates or potent alpha-blockers.Patient Considerations
Avoid heavy meals or alcohol before dosing. Sexual stimulation is necessary for the medication to be effective. Not recommended for patients with severe heart disease or recent stroke.Ready for next steps?
