Overview

Atomoxetine, marketed as Strattera, is a selective norepinephrine-reuptake inhibitor (NRI) used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Unlike stimulants, it lacks abuse potential and provides 24-hour symptom control.

Dosage & Administration

Initial dose: 0.5 mg/kg/day, increased after several days to 1.2 mg/kg/day (max 100 mg). Adults typically start at 40 mg daily, titrated to 80 mg. Capsules should be swallowed whole. Full therapeutic response may take several weeks.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common: nausea, decreased appetite, insomnia, and dry mouth. Serious: liver-injury risk, suicidal ideation in youth, and elevated heart rate or blood pressure. Contraindicated with MAOIs or narrow-angle glaucoma.

Patient Considerations

Blood-pressure and liver-function monitoring recommended. Take consistently at the same time daily. Do not open capsules.
