Overview
Meldonium (also called Mildronate) is a metabolic modulator originally developed in Latvia during the 1970s to improve oxygen utilization and energy metabolism. It inhibits γ-butyrobetaine hydroxylase, decreasing carnitine synthesis and shifting cellular energy production from fatty-acid to glucose oxidation, which is more oxygen-efficient.
Uses
Approved in some Eastern European countries for treatment of angina, chronic heart failure, ischemic brain disorders, and physical or mental fatigue. It gained global attention in 2016 when banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency for performance-enhancing potential.Dosage & Administration
Typical oral dose: 250–500 mg two to four times daily for up to 4–6 weeks. Intravenous forms exist for hospital use. Not approved by the U.S. FDA or EMA.Side Effects & Warnings
Usually well tolerated; possible effects include headache, tachycardia, dyspepsia, and allergic rash. Contraindicated in increased intracranial pressure and during pregnancy.Patient Considerations
Consult a physician before use, especially in cardiovascular disease. Because regulatory approval varies by region, authenticity of imported products should be verified.Ready for next steps?
