Overview

Phenazopyridine, marketed as Pyridium, is a urinary-tract analgesic providing local relief from discomfort, burning, and urgency. It exerts a topical anesthetic effect on mucosa of the urinary tract.

Uses

Used for symptomatic relief of urinary irritation from infection, trauma, or catheters; not an antibiotic.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 200 mg three times daily after meals for up to 2 days (with antibiotic).

Side Effects & Warnings

Common: orange-red urine discoloration, mild stomach upset. Rare: hemolytic anemia in G6PD deficiency, kidney or liver dysfunction with prolonged use.

Use short-term only. Warn patients about urine color change staining fabrics.
