Overview

Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin-type antibiotic introduced in the early 1970s. It inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, causing cell lysis. Known for its excellent oral absorption and mild side-effect profile, it is widely prescribed for bacterial infections in both adults and children.

Uses

Effective against many Gram-positive and some Gram-negative organisms. Indicated for ear, nose, throat, respiratory, urinary-tract, skin, and gastrointestinal infections. It is also combined with clavulanic acid (Augmentin) to overcome beta-lactamase resistance and with clarithromycin and omeprazole to eradicate Helicobacter pylori.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 250–500 mg every 8 hours or 500–875 mg every 12 hours, depending on infection type. Children: 20–40 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Shake suspensions before use and store refrigerated. Complete the full course to prevent resistance.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common: nausea, diarrhea, and rash. Rare: allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and antibiotic-associated colitis. Contraindicated in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity.

Patient Considerations

Amoxicillin is generally well tolerated but ineffective for viral illnesses. Oral contraceptives may be less effective during therapy—use backup methods.
