Overview

Tamoxifen, marketed as Nolvadex, is a selective estrogen-receptor modulator (SERM) that acts as an estrogen antagonist in breast tissue but partial agonist in other organs. Developed in the 1970s, it remains a cornerstone therapy for hormone-receptor–positive breast cancer.

Eligibility & what we check for Nolvadex

During your video visit we confirm symptoms, onset, red‑flag warnings, allergies, prior responses to treatment, and any conditions that would change the plan (for example kidney or liver concerns, pregnancy planning, or interactions with current medicines and supplements). We also align on goals—pain relief, fewer flare‑ups, improved function, or prevention—and clarify what success will look like for you.

Uses

Indicated for treatment and prevention of estrogen-receptor–positive breast cancer in pre- and post-menopausal women. Also used off-label for male gynecomastia and infertility due to hypogonadism.

Dosage & Administration

Typical dose: 20 mg once daily, continued for 5–10 years depending on recurrence risk. Tablets may be taken with or without food.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common: hot flashes, nausea, leg cramps. Serious: endometrial cancer, venous thromboembolism, and ocular toxicity. Regular gynecologic and ophthalmic exams are recommended. Contraindicated in pregnancy and while using coumarin-type anticoagulants.
